Desert Rides at 14th Rocky Point Rally™
A ride to the Pinacate
By Russ Black, Peñasco Recreation Co.
During the 14th Annual Rocky Point Rally™ this November, you have a chance to experience something unique in the area of Puerto Peñasco. Beyond the beaches, resorts, restaurants and fantastic cantinas of Puerto Peñasco is the Pinacate Reserve.
Join a fantastic ride out to the Pinacate (pin-ah-COT-tay) Biosphere Reserve just North of Puerto Peñasco. The reserve has been set aside by the Mexican Federal Government as a protected area because of its history, beauty and its special place in the world. This is a UNESCO World heritage site and one not to be missed.
This year, rides will head out to the Visitors Center of the Pinacate Reserve on Friday (Nov. 7), Saturday (Nov. 8), and Sunday (Nov. 9), all starting at the Barclin Pemex/Circle K just North of Puerto Peñasco at 10 a.m.* (*weather permitting, subject to changes). It is about a 30 minute ride on great roads and takes us some 5 miles back into the pristine Sonoran desert where we wind up at the Visitors Center, a completely self-sustained museum of sorts in the middle of the desert, situated atop lava flows. There is plenty of parking and we will have a chance to visit the museum displays as guest of the National Parks Service of Mexico.
Free! Meet up at Barclin’s PEMEX/Circle K for departure at 10 a.m. Barclin’s convenience store offers coffee and snacks, so come early for some caffeine.
